Introduction
A small house of worship may have just 1 hall and space for a maximum of 100 people. This would only need a couple of wall mounted speakers, an amplifier, mixer and some microphones with appropriate cables.
Speakers
Suitable speakers for consideration are the JBL Control One Pro. These are small speakers but have a large sound. They come with a wall mount and are very easy to install. The speakers are around £150 for a pair.
Amplifier
A 2-channel amplifier is enough to power up to 4 speakers. We recommend the Crown XLi 800 2-channel amplifier with a 3 year warranty which is around £350.
Mixer
For small to medium mosques we recommend a Digital Mixer such as the Behringer Flow-8. This allows remote control of the mixer via an app for around £200. This mixer also has effects, USB input and output, Bluetooth streaming and balanced XLR inputs and outputs – essential for eliminating noise and hum. The price of this mixer is so low now that it’s not worth getting an analogue mixer.
Microphones
A Lapel mic is a very good way to capture speech. It’s discrete and easy to put on. There are two types – wired and wireless. We recommend a wired lapel mic where possible as wireless mics are more expensive, prone to interference and need batteries changed or charged often.
We recommend the Audio Technica Pro 70 for around £130.
For a Handheld mic we recommend the Shure SM58s classic switched microphone for around £130.
Cables
We should always use good quality cable. For public buildings you must use Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH or LSOH) cable by law for permanently installed cables such as speaker cables.
Speaker Cable
Speaker cable should be double insulated and should be of sufficient gauge to handle current loads from the amplifier. We recommend Van Damme 2 x 1.5mm Ecoflex install grade speaker cable for smaller runs upto 25m and 2 x 2.5mm for longer runs less than 50m. 10m of 2 x 1.5mm speaker cable is about £40.
Microphone Cable
Microphone cable should be twin core shielded LSZH installation grade or at least 5mm XLR cable for direct connections to microphones.
We recommend Van Damme Digilog Ecoflex Install grade shielded audio cable for permanent installations – 10m is about £15.
For microphone and instrument cables we recommend Van Damme Classic Instrument XLR cable – 5m is about £30.
